Draft - Chapter Mission

Please review the draft mission below and provide comments (in the aptly named, "comments" section). Your feedback is appreciated:

The Central California Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology comprises a group of students, professionals and interested members of the public, who participate in, and promote, conservation biology, in keeping with the mission of the international Society for Conservation Biology (http://www.conbio.org/AboutUs/). To this end, one major purpose of this chapter is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas between local conservation biologists, students, and advocates in Central California.

Our vision is a Chapter that makes links between local conservation organizations, practitioners and students. In this way we hope to promote greater knowledge and access to local conservation initiatives, and understand and promote education and development of skills necessary to continue conservation efforts.

Looks good. My one nit-picky point is that when I read "one" major purpose, it set me up to expect more comming. Maybe we could change "one" to "our" or "a" major purpose.

My one concern about the mission statement is that it is too long. Typically a mission statement should be concise and not longer than a couple of sentences. Part of the drafted mission statement is more description of who we are rather than the mission of the group. So that being said, I recommend that it be shortened to something like:

The Central California Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology provides a forum for exchange of ideas between local conservation biologists, students, and advocates in Central California. The CCCSCB strives to make links between local conservation organizations, practitioners and students to promote greater knowledge and understanding of local conservation initiatives and develop the necessary skills for successful conservation efforts.

I like Philipp's suggestion. I have a few minor edits, plus the idea to clarify our chapter's geographic scope:

The Central California Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology provides a forum for exchange of ideas between local conservation biologists, students, and advocates in the southern San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay Areas. The Chapter strives to make links between local conservation organizations, practitioners and students to promote greater knowledge and understanding of local conservation initiatives and research and to develop the necessary skills for successful conservation efforts.
